I have worked for the last few years developing the soft, loose background technique you see in the watercolors. I use lots of water before and after adding color, tipping the paper, and using a hand sprayer to mingle colors and create a spotted, runny look, letting the paper dry several times between applications. The paintings you see on natural hand-made papers (most of them imported fair-trade by villagers in India, the Phillipines, Africa and Viet Nam) are sumi ink, some gesso, and watercolor. Most of my paintings are glued on white or black gessoed canvas, many of them triptychs. All materials are non-acidic museum quality. Not having glass or frame makes the finished paintings light and VERY easy to store and carry to shows.
